AstraZeneca’s new, $35 million new branded version of Nexium (esomeprazole) is expected to cost between $4-6 a tablet.
Nexium (esomeprazole) has been in development since 2012 and will now be available in a generic version with an added strength of 20 milligrams of dapsone.
Nexium is a type of drug called a proton pump inhibitor, which is used to treat stomach, intestinal and kidney problems, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other conditions.
The new generic version of Nexium, Prevacid, was launched in June 2018 and is expected to be available in two strengths, 20 milligrams and 40 milligrams, after a two-year wait before the company’s patent expiry. The new name for the brand will be “Lupron’s Nexium”, which is the brand name for Nexium.
The new formulation, which is similar to the popular prescription drug Prilosec, was developed with AstraZeneca and was used to treat a variety of conditions, including stomach ulcers, acid reflux, gastroesophageal reflux and heartburn. AstraZeneca is now selling its generic version in a lower-strength formulation to reduce costs.

Dosage:
